Hyundai Repair: Transmission Automatic Accent 98, factory service manuals, forward gears

Question
Based on the Factory service manuals, it shows the circuts that are supposed to be open on the range switch in each gear. Several (particularly the reverse circuts) are not open (no circut) in reverse and other gears. It's $72 for a factory range switch, but it looks like my next step before I go for a rebuild.  I noticed in another post you suggested that reverse should work reguardless of the range switch. Could you elaborate?

98 Accent / Auto. No problems with trans operations. Then one day, no reverse, wont go over 35 and then only with high RPM's (limp in mode?).
Trans fluid dirty, no excessive metal in pan. Fluid changed 2 times, no effect. Valvebody pulled, cleaned (without dissasebly) with brake parts cleaner. All servos working as checked for resistance with Factory shop manual. NO fault codes (even disconnected the TPS to cause a fault so I know the new reader is OK). Shops all want 1200-1500 to rebuild, etc. I cant believe that trans toasted overnight.

There's no good news.  If your shift cable and range switch are adjusted and operating properly, you need a transmission overhaul or replacement.  Check local dealer prices for factory remanufactured units.  The price may be similar to aftermarket rebuilds.

Answer
It's not necessarily the case that reverse will work regardless of range switch operation, but if there are no other functional problems, I cannot see how the range switch could be the problem.  The range switch is necessary for the other gears as well, and the same solenoids are used for reverse as are used for the forward gears.

As I read the schematic, when in reverse, you should have power at pins 2 (power), 7 (power), 8 (reverse lamps), and 11 (TCM input) and no other pins.  If that checks okay, I wouldn't bother replacing the range switch.  Chances are small that the range switch is your problem, but when facing a potential difference in repair cost of $1500, it's worth investigating to make sure.
