Hyundai Repair: 2004 Hyundai Accent GL, hyundai accent, mile warranty

Question
Hi. I have this car for 2 years now and currently has 24k miles in it. I actually bought it for my teenage son. He just moved to college and has been driving the car only on weekends, within 10 mile radius. He told me that he noticed that when he starts the car this morning, it felt like it was kicking/jolting. He got on the freeway and one of the lights on the dash panel lit up. When he looked in the manual to see what it meant, he found out that it's a malfunction light warning that has to do with exhaust?

As I mentioned, this is only 2 years old and only has 12k miles when we purchased it from a Chevrolet dealer who used it as a loaner. As far as I know, the 60k-mile warranty was transferred over to us when we purchased the car.

Is this something that's under warranty? The car has never been involved in accident and I've always had the oil changed within 3k miles.

Thank you so much for your advise.

Answer
It sounds like the check engine lamp is on and the vehicle is experincing a misfire.  If the check engine lamp is flashing, the car should not be driven.  That's an indicator that driving the car could be damaging the catalytic converter.

Unless the problem is with the spark plugs, I'd expect it to be covered under the vehicle's 5/60 warranty, which stays with the vehicle no matter who owns it.
