Hyundai Repair: squealing/squeaking noise from power steering pump, hyundai elantra gt, 2003 hyundai elantra

Question
Thank you for your previous response. I still have the same problem on my 2003 Hyundai Elantra GT automatic.

What symptome will I have, if rack and pinion have some problem. Mechanic in the dealer has replaced power steering pump and belt two times with brand new ones but squealing noise is not gone. I have sqealing noise coming from the friction between belt and stopped pump which stops when 1.always, I make a full turn a wheel,  2. sometimes on just ignition with brake pedal pressed 3. sometimes, slightly turn the wheel after car just ignited 4. then, the horrible sqealing noise stay on during backward with turn and release the wheel to forward.

The noise stops after the car move forward when I made a full release of the wheel. Then it is OK during driving. But when I restart my car about 10 hours later, same symptom comes back.

This usually happens evening rather than morning. In the morning, there's noise only I make a full turn.

Please give me another help. Thank you so much.

-----Question-----
I have 2003 Elantra GT. Noise started right after belt replacement from a Hyundai dealer. Every time when I make a full turn the steering wheel, there's always sqealing noise, sometimes very very annoying and sometimes just annoying. And sometimes the noise is made even in the slight turning wheel. Mechanics in dealer have replaced power pump twice and also replaced belt but cannot solve the problem. Mechanic showed me that the pump actually stops on wheel's full turn position, which make frictional noise with belt that is connected to engine.

Now mechanics look like avoiding response my call. One of mechanics said that they did everything they can do, which I cannot accept. Please advise me what to do. My car is still under warranty.

My guess would be that the alternator belt is too loose.  The alternator belt drives the water pump, which in turn drives the power steering pump.  The alternator belt needs to be very tight in order to not slip.  You may be able to check this youself.  If you can push on the alternator belt and make it flex between the pulleys with only moderate pressure, then the belt is too loose.

If the dealer refuses to provide you service, call Hyundai customer assistance at 1-800-633-5151 (presuming you're in the U.S.)  This should open a case that pretty much requires a dealer to respond.

Answer
If there's a problem with the rack, you should experience a lack of assist, but wouldn't typically have a squealing issue.

If the pump won't turn in any normal circumstance, you're pretty much limited to:
1.  Internal problem in pump,
2.  Loose power steering belt, or
3.  Loose alternator belt.
Note that holding pressure on the wheel with the wheel fully turned is not considered normal, and you might experience some squeal under that circumstance.

You say they've replaced the pump and the power steering belt, but did they ever check the tension on the alternator belt?  The alternator belt being loose is consistent with every symptom you list, including the squeal on cold starts even when the wheel isn't being turned.
