Hyundai Repair: Timing Belt Tensioner, timing belt tensioner, hydraulic tensioner

Question
I have a 99 Sonata GLS 2.5 V6 with 141,000 miles.  I hate say that the timing belt has never been changed.  I have the car apart and cannot figure out how to release or move the tensioner for belt removal.  So far, I have moved the pin up and applied more pressure to the belt which has move the aft cam sprocket slightly.  How do I move the tensioner to remove the belt?

Answer
There's a hydraulic tensioner pushing on the tensioner arm and pulley assembly.  Remove the two bolts holding the hydraulic tensioner in place and pull it out.  Then you'll have enough slack to remove the belt and install the new one.

I'd recommend replacing the hydraulic tensioner assembly.  If it fails, it can cause the same engine damage as a broken timing belt.  If you decide to reuse the tensioner, you'll need to put it in a vise and compress it ad put a pin through the holes in the body and shaft to keep it compressed.  You'll need something fairly hard; a paper clip won't cut it.  The new tensioner will come already compressed and pinned in place.

When installing the new belt, put the belt on and get everything lined up, then install the tensioner, and last, pull the pin to release the tensioner.
