Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Crank Sensor, hyundai lantra sportswagon, crank angle sensor

Question
Hi there,
I have a 1997 Hyundai Lantra Sportswagon, 4cylinder. I was driving along and the motor died on me, its not the battery, fuel plugs or points the Roadside mechanic mentioned crank angle sensor, would this stop the car for starting?also are they expensive to replace and to be fitted, I would do it myself if possible but I will need help as I not sure being a female I might need help with any tight bolts. I havent tried this before..
I have ordered a manual on CD but I havent got it yet..can you help? thanks in advance

Answer
The crankshaft sensor is located in the side of the cylinder block under the exhaust manifold on the transmission end.  It's held in by one 10mm bolt.

To replace the sensor, you'll need a socket wrench, a long extension, and a 10mm swivel socket.  You might be able to get a regular 10mm socket in-- I cannot recall.  If you can get your hands into the area, it's not difficult, so I wouldn't discourage trying it if you think you might be able to do it.  When you remove the old sensor, be sure the old o-ring comes out with it, otherwise the new sensor will sit too far away from the wheel on the crankshaft to read it.

If your timing belt hasn't stripped or broken and you've got no spark, the crank sensor is a good guess.  There's no way the car can run without it.  It's what the computer uses to determine how fast the engine is turning and what position the crankshaft is in.

You can also try to obtain service information on your car at www.hmaservice.com.  You'll need to register for a free account and the site requires Internet Explorer.  It's only for USA spec vehicles, but most of what you access there is probably at least similar to your vehicle.
