Hyundai Repair: 2001 Hyundai Elantra overheating, hyundai elantra, upper radiator hose

Question
I have a 2001 Elantra that is overheating.  It was a bit low on coolant so I added coolant.  The fan appears to be coming on at intervals. How can I check to see if its the thermostat thats bad. Also, could you please tell me where the thermostat is located? Thanks alot for your help.

Answer
First, check under and over the engine for leaks, especially around where the radiator hoses connect to the engine.

To check if the theremostat is functioning:
1.  Let the vehicle cool.
2.  Remove the radiator cap.
3.  Start the vehicle and watch the coolant in the radiator.  As the vehicle reaches normal operating temperature, the theremostat should open, and you should be able to see the coolant flowing.  If the coolant starts bubbling out of the radiator violently (not just expanding and coming out) before the coolant flows, the thermostat is stuck shut.  Similarly, if the cooling fans come on before the coolant flows (they'll be blowing little hot air in this case), the thermostat is stuck closed.

The thermostat is located in the fitting to which the upper radiator hose attaches.  You'll need to remove the air box to take it off.
