Hyundai Repair: car remote of 2000 Sonata, technical assistance center, keyless entry system

Question
I bought a used car from a dealer. It came with a remote, but the remote never worked(but the LED light went on when I pushed the button). I did try to reprogram it following the instruction on HMA service website. Today, I found that there were six scratches on the printed circuit board of the remote, nine connections were cut by the deep scratches. Could the scrathes break the remote? How can I tell the remote is broken or the keyless entry system in my car was broken ?

Answer
Yes, the scratches could be preventing the remote from working, but the fact that the LED illuminates *probably* indicates that it's okay.

Hyundai dealers have a special tool which checks for rf transmission from the remote.  Rf transmission also indicates that the remote is *probably* okay.

Here's where I think your problem lies.  The 2000 Sonata didn't come with factory alarm or keyless.  All the Hyundai systems on the 2000 Hyundais were either installed at port of entry or at the dealer (or by someone else here).  And they're *very* difficult to program.  If it isn't what you've looked at already, look at TSB 01-90-011.  It gives instructions and identification information in excellent detail.  But it leaves out one very important point.  When programming (presuming you don't have the valet switch as most systems do not), touch the white and black wires together momentarily and separate for 1 second before touching together momentarily again.  It's the 1 second interval between touches that's paramount.  Too much deviation one way or the other and you need to start all over.  I've been able to do this in the service bay with some difficulty.  It's so difficult, the Hyundai technical assistance center actually has a jig set up for programming.  They'll do the programming for the dealer if the dealer mails them the control module and remotes.

If after trying the above, you still cannot get the remotes to program, I'd recommend taking the car to the local Hyundai dealer to have them check the system (as long as it's one of the Hyundai systems shown in TSB 01-90-011).
