Hyundai Repair: 2000 Tiburon will crank, but will not start, pep boys, position sensor

Question
Well, I got it back from being diagnosed at Pep Boys.  There was no codes and they indicated there was no spark or fuel.  But, when they were hooking up their tools, the car started no problem and has been ever since.  They indicated that it could be the computer (but check engine light illuminates when started, then goes off) or the crank position sensor.  If I recall, there was a TSB on the crank position sensor?

2000 Tiburon, manual trans, 113K miles.  I've been noticing lately that it has been starting a bit harder than normal.  Today, it didn't fire up after cranking at all.  It has the original battery and the only items I had done recenly (in the past year) was a fuel filter, plugs, wires, timing belt and fuel pump.

Answer -
Does the car crank normally, fast, or slow?  If fast, then you'll want to check compression.  If slow, you'll want to check your battery/alternator/starter.

If it cranks normally, then you'll want to move on to those things that may make the car not run.  Does the check engine lamp illuminate when you turn the key to the "on" position?  If so, then the computer is operational.  Has your check engine lamp been coming on when you drive?  If so, you'll want the stored code(s).  Actually, it's a good idea to check for codes even if the check engine lamp hasn't been coming on.  If you've got trouble codes, begin by diagnosing all the codes that could relate to your problem.

If you don't have any trouble codes, you'll need to work to isolate your issue.  Check to see if you've got spark.  Check to see if how much fuel pressure you have.  If you have access to a noid lamp, check to see whether the computer fires the injectors.

Once you find out what's missing, then you can check those things which could cause that sort of problem.

Answer
If it's starting normally and there are no trouble codes, the chances of getting it diagnosed correctly are pretty close to zero.

I checked for tsb's relating to the crank sensor on this car and found none.  Doesn't mean that's not the problem, though.

And finally, this isn't the sort of problem I'd normally recommend to be addressed at Pep Boys.  And this isn't intended as a slam against Pep Boys, but unless they're different than most other Pep Boys' I've seen, they won't have anyone there that is really good at driveability diagnosis, and that's what you would want in a case like this, unless it seems like the problem is likely a weak battery or something.  For an issue like this, I'd recommend the dealer or an independent shop (not chain) with a great reputation for driveability work.
