Hyundai Repair: 99 Hyundai Sonata Pulley Belt for Altenator, power steering pump, hyundai sonata

Question
Hey there,

As we speak my boyfriend is replacing the altenator in my car. He is trying to replace the pulley belt also, but he needs to loosen the tension on the other belt that is there (sorry, I don't know what it's called). There is no manual in the care. Please help asap!!!
Thank you!

Answer
I'll presume you have a 2.4L 4 cylinder engine since you say there are two belts.

The outer belt drives the power steering and a/c.  Under the power steering pump is the idler pulley and bracket.  On the back side of that bracket (toward the exhaust manifold) is a 14mm pinch nut that needs to be loosened.  Once that is loose, the 14mm bolt on the bracket with head near the radiator can be loosened, relieving the tension of the p/s-a/c belt.

The alternator belt is tensioned in a similar way using the top alternator mounting bolt and a tensioning bolt on the top alternator bracket.

And some advice.  Make sure replace your timing belt religiously by the mainenance interval on this car (or even a little early).  The 2.4L engine likes to eat timing belts.  I've seen numerous failures shortly after the maintenance interval (4 years or 60k miles) and a few a little bit within the interval.  If it strips or breaks, it is likely to cause significant engine damage.
