Hyundai Repair: Check Engine Light-Evaporation Emission Vapor 2002 Hyundai Elantra, hyundai elantra, emission control system

Question
I have a 2002 Hyundai Elantra that has about 62000 miles on it. A few days ago the check engine light came on. Initially I thought the gas cap might be loose because that has happened in the past. However after checking the gas cap the light didn't go off.
I went to the local auto parts store to have it read and they said the light was an Evaporation Emission Vapor problem that is related to something near the gas tank. The technician said it was ok to drive around with the car in this condition, but said if the vapors built up the gas tank could explode.
Can you pleas expound on the problem and what should be done to correct it. I plan on getting it taken care of ASAP but in the meantime I need to know if it's safe to drive.

Answer
hope this helps an no the car will not blow up,never seen that.
