Isuzu Repair: 2000 Trooper automatic transmission, montero sport, toyota 4runner

Question
My transmission started slipping the other day while we were on vacation. Granted, we were loaded down with 3 bikes, 4 people, and a slew of camping gear. The first mechanic said that the 2nd gear clutch was burned out and that we could keep going (we have come to the conclusion, however, that he wanted us to take our Isuzu and leave him alone). I have not tried to drive it since it was unloaded. Is there anything I can do to make it last longer without replacing the transmission? We've only owned it 2 months, and a new or rebuilt transmission would cost more than we paid for it. What can I do to keep it going long enough to either a)save enough $$ put a new transmission in it (I love the truck and would hate to part with it) or b) find a nice Xterra or Montero that falls within my price range?

Answer
Well Seth. I had the same problem and I had it flushed, new filter, new gasket and refilled and the problem vanished. However this will be one of many major problems you will face when dealing with this vehicle. I would sell it and buy either a montero, montero sport or a toyota 4runner or tacoma, tundra. I personally own a 98 montero sport 4x4 3.0 ls and it has NEVER NEVER left me or my wife stranded and it has over 100,000 on it. I paid about 5,200.00 for mine and it looks amazing to boot! Although the decision is ulimately yours and it will be respected.
