Isuzu Repair: help! my starter went bad, negative battery cable, heat shield

Question
I have a 97 passport, with what i take to be a bad starter. You have to turn the key sometimes 50 times or more to get it started, runs great afterwards, just don't shut it off. to repair or replace the starter looks like a chore, what can i do and how do i do it?

Answer
On a 97 if 2wd it is very simple Stephen. Takes about half an hour or so. Raise the vehicle on jackstands. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the heat-shield, flywheel cover, and then the starter is held on by two bolts. Remove these and the starter should be able to slide out from underneath the vehicle.
