Jaguar Repair: Horn, jumper wire, fuse panel

Question
The horn on our 1986 Jag VDP does not work no sound- could it be the horn relay? or do we need to replace the entire horn system?

Answer
Hi Amy

Don't replace anything until you find out what is wrong. You will need a 12v test light to do the test necessary to find the problem. It is a simple procedure and can all be done at the horn relay socket.

The relay is located under the hood up front on the right. The relay itself has 4 pins and they are labeled 85, 86, 87 and 30/51. 85 should be powered with the key in the "ON" position (first position) and 30/51 should be powered all the time. Some relays were labeled C-1, C-2, W-1 and W-2. If your relay is labeled this way W-1 is the powered with the key on and C-1 is powered all the time.

If the socket position for 85 is not powered with the key on, check the main (drivers side) fuse panel Fuse #11.

To test the horns themselves take a jumper wire and jump from a power source (socket #30/51 or C-1) and touch the end of your powered test wire to socket #87 or C-1 to sound the horns.
Many times the sockets are not numbered so look at the numbers on the relay pins to ID the correct socket position.

let me know the results of these tests and I will tell you the next step.
