Jaguar Repair: 1970 Jaguar e type tach, jaguar e type, pulse issue

Question
Howard, I cannot thank you enough for already answering a couple of questions about my Spitfire.  I also have a 70 series II e type......just acquired.  My tach does not work I think because the ignition has been converted to electronic and I guess it's a pulse issue.  Is there anyway to overcome that?  Any adapters perhaps?  Thanks so much.....Rory

Answer
Hi Rory,

The tach is powered by a green wire off of #7 fuse and the trigger is the grounding of the coil and I doubt that the tach knows or cares what grounded the coil, a set of contact points or an electronic system.

Possibly When they put in the new system they rewired the coil supply. The tach is between the power supply (ignition switch) and the ignition coil. (white wire in and white wire out to the coil. So it should not matter what kind of ignition system is used to ground the coil and break the circuit.

Some cars do trigger a tach off of the ignition system but the E-Type did not. As long as the car has a coil on it then it should still operate.
