Jaguar Repair: 1983 jaguar xj6 transmission problem, automatic transmission shops, 1983 jaguar xj6

Question
Hi Howard,
My jaguar tossed a band out of the transmission after the wrong transmission fluid was put in, it had tiny metal shavings in the pan, but looked like it might have been normal wear. I changed the transmission filter and changed the transmission fluid twice, the fluid came out black each time. I had the rear jacked up and the wheels would spin while the car was in drive, I haven't tried second gear or third, the car also reversed down ramps, but the car doesn't seem to move when its on its own weight, it sounds like the plates are slipping(rubbing sound, no clinking). Could you tell me what you think about this information, does it sound like I need a full transmission repair, if not could I just replace the band myself? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Tyler,

It sounds like you need a complete overhaul of the transmission for several reasons. It is very difficult to get all that metal particles out of the torque converter and all the passageways.

This is a Borg Warner 66 and most any domestic automatic transmission shop that rebuilds transmissions can work on it and usually even get all the parts for it.

I have two series 3 Jags and one needed the transmission gone through and I found that they were able to rebuild it for less then I could get the parts for.

You may get lucky by just patching it but I wouldn't do it. Price the parts then check with a few automatic transmission shops then decide.
