Jaguar Repair: 1986 Jaguar xj-6, jaguar xj 6, rubber grommet

Question
QUESTION: We can't seem to get a spark to start the car.  We've replaced the ignition coil, and the ignition amplifier.  Is there a way to check the pickup with an owm meter??  If there is, what are the parameters for it.  We put an owm meter on the wires and are getting a variance from the readings.

ANSWER: Hi Al,

A common failed item in the ignition system is the leads going to the pick-up so when testing the ohm reading you should wiggle the leads to the rubber grommet and the leads inside from the grommet to the pick-up while testing the resistance. The resistance should be within 2.2 to 4.8 K ohms but be consistent. The pick-up is just a coil and all of the failed units I found were broken leads.

QUESTION: Hello Howard:

Your assistance with my first question was very helpful indeed.  We were able to finally start the car.  It runs fine until the engine reaches 2000 rpm's and then it starts to sputter.  We changed the fuel filter and it was full of water.  So we're not sure if there is water in the fuel tanks.  (The car was sitting in a garage for about 5 years.)  We've added dry gas to the fuel, as well as injector cleaner (in the event that the injectors were clogged).  Nothing seems to work.  It idles fine.  But like I stated earlier, when the engine reaches 2000 rpm it starts to sputter.  Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Answer
Hi Al,

At 2000 RPM, is this in gear and on the road or just setting still and running free?

Here is one test you need to run. Just put a vacuum gauge on a vacuum line and slowly raise the RPM until it won't go any more and note what the manifold vacuum reading is as you climb in RPM.

let me know the results.
