Question
Have purchased a 1976 4.2 auto that hasnt been driven in about 15 years.Car runs pretty well but will not select any gears, car wont start if in gear so ihibitor switch is working and checked fuses and everything ok there and selector lever on box is operating with gear shift.I believe these auto boxes don't like being stood not used for years, could this be something simple or could i be looking at an overhaul.

Answer
Hi Jim,

Not much can be done outside the transmission other then check the fluid level. There is a port for checking pump pressure but with no gear operating that is probably a waste of time. I'm not an automatic transmission expert but I so think it is time to find a transmission shop. They may be able to just pull the pan and valve body to find out what is wrong but sitting that long, it probably should be gone through anyway.

Here is the US there are automatic transmission shops that only do automatic transmissions. Many mechanics here just sublet that kind of work.

Sorry, I don't know of any external simple thing to make it work.
