Jaguar Repair: 88 VDP fail Smog test - High Noxide, fuel air mixture, smog tests

Question
Hi Howard,
I have an 88 VDP that I just bought from my father in AZ. It only has 57K miles on it and he has kept up on all scheduled maintenance. Through the years it passed AZ smog tests with easily. I just  had it tested in CA and here are the results.
15 MPH,1920 RPM
HC = 21, limit is 73 = Pass
CO = 0.0, limit is 0.49 = Pass
NO = 2281, limit is 530 (NO is Nitrogen Oxide) = Gross Polluter
Maybe related? I have a gas smell while driving
Maybe related? The battery looses charge after sitting 2 days.
Any ideas where to start?

Answer
Hi Larry,

I don't have any experience nor info on the 40 series jag (88 model)but just looking at your readings my guess is that the CO is too lean thus overheating the combustion chambers thus burning the Nitrogen in the air causing NOX. The nitrogen only burns when the combustion is too hot. In some other cars the factory installs EGR to dilute the fuel/air mixture to cut down on NOX but I don't think the 40 ser jag has an EGR valve.

I don't know that injection system but most operate in the same manner and I would get the specs on the injection coolant temp sensor, the fuel pressure and the O2 sensor. If all that is correct I would find a shop that can test the air mass meter too. Those are the major influences on fuel mixture.
