Jaguar Repair: 1984 XJ6 heat, climate control system, vacuum fitting

Question
QUESTION: Howard,
I continue to work through what I can with my heat system and found tonight that I was not getting heat due to the flaps not moving. I have two (I hope) simple questions. Is the solenoid, actuator that distributes vacuum based on settings and sensors on the left side of the passenger foot well, behind the lower vent? I see two rigid linkage rods going to that area. Next, what is the smallish metal box, immediately left of the blower relay pack, that has a vacuum fitting, and two wires? I ask because I found it to me hissing tonight - there is a hole on the back that was pulling vacuum. I covered it with a piece of tape, but what is it, and is a vacuum hose supposed to attach to that back side? If so, where does the other end of the hose attach? I have to work through this myself as me and my wife have had no luck locating the manual after extensive searching online, and the Haynes manual is useless on this stuff.
Thanks!

ANSWER: The reason Haynes does not cover the climate control system is because it would require an additional book just to cover the system. As I told you, the drum servo controls the vacuum vales and electrical connections and the servo is powered by a small electric motor which is in turn controlled by a combination of the mode control switch, the temp control switch, the inside temp censor, the Ranco thermistor, The water temp, and the amplifier.

It is NOT a simple manual system that operates the vacuum motors when you turn on a switch.

I can not work on one without the Jaguar Heat/AC manual laid out in front of me and follow the test sequence. I fail to see how you think that you can. You must be sharper than I am.

QUESTION: With all due respect, can you simply answer the question that was asked? What IS the unit with the rigid linkage arms, just behind the right side floor vent, and what is the item just left of the relay pack, as described? I very much appreciate the time you take here, but please, throw me a bone. I do not have, and cannot locate this manual you speak of, and it does me no good to be told over and over that one (you) cannot work on it without it. I DON'T HAVE IT and am doing what I can. If it was on the shelf at the bookstore, and I simply refused to to go buy it, it might make sense for you to tell me to do so. I am only asking for little nuggets or hints. If I still fail, it is not your responsibility; but it seems you do not even read the question and address it.

ANSWER: If you just want to ID components here is the layout of both sides and all the components on the box.

QUESTION: Thank you very much for the diagram. That may be of some help. May I ask though, why you feel it necessary to talk down to someone the way you do? I DO NOT HAVE A MANUAL for the A/C and Heat and cannot find one. How is it so foolish of me to work on something without the manual, if I cannot GET the manual. Seems like a paradox, that you say you will not work on it without the manual, and sarcastically say that I must be "sharper than you are", but also cannot say where I could even begin to find this manual. I do not presume that I am sharper than you by any means, but I am also no common monkey and I am generally able to repair nearly anything if given proper direction. I know you must sometimes become frustrated with those who should probably not even be using tools, but I am doing what I can with what I have and I have been nothing but grateful for your help, when given.

Answer
Sorry Michael, that you are offended that I don't want to spend the time going over this Heat/AC system for you. I was a hot line answer-man for mechanics for a large Import car parts importer for 15 years and tried hundreds of times to help experienced mechanics correct problems on the series III heat/AC system. I was rarely successful and it was time consuming as this has already been.  I don't consider you a common monkey or you would not be trying to repair a complex system like this is.

I have uploaded a diagram of the electrical system in several sections to my web site for you to copy, if that will help. If not, you need to find someone who can help you. It's not me.
