Jaguar Repair: 1986 XJ6 4.2 constant energy, sng barratt, ballast resistor

Question
cranks but no spark (fuel pump works).
- have 12v at both terminal of coil (new) with ign sw on run(2-3)
- ballast resistor appears OK; measures 1.4 ohm
- no spark: checked with coil wire removed from distributor
- with pickup still plugged in to ignition amplifier (made test leads to the "W" and "G" terminals on the GM spark module), ign sw on run(2-3), have 0.8 v.
-  with pickup unplugged, measure really high resistance across the pickup connector: 103K ohms;  book says 2200 to 4800 ohms, so doesn't look like much current would get through).

Do I automatically buy a new pickup?  (found new for $105 at SNG Barratt)

Finally, are there any (more) ways to test the ignition amplifier? If I need a new one, I assume I can also rebuild the old one with a new Ignition Control Module (NAPA TP45, Delco D1906 -- $22 to $46)

Answer
Hi David,
Yes, the pick up should measure 2.2 K ohms to 4.8 K ohms. Most of the failed pick ups that I seen had the pig tail wire break inside it's insulation. So do your testing while wiggling the lead.
The Amp can be taken apart and the GM module inside can usually be matched up even though the numbers may not match.
