QUESTION: O Yah OOPS!!! A 1983 xj6

ANSWER: Hi Sid,
First I would confirm that you have power at the light green wire at the signal switch. (you should look at the color code of the wire on the harness side of the plug as I have found that some of the switches do not keep the color code to match the harness)Confirm that the black wire is a good ground.
Now, make two small jumpers to plug into the harness plug. Turn the ign off. Connect one jumper between the black wire and the pink w/light green tracer. Then plug the other jumper between the light green wire (power) and  the black w/light green tracer wire.
Turn the key on and the wipers should run slow.

This will tell you if the wiper motor and some of the wiring is operating. If it does not run then you need to do testing at the wiper motor itself. If it does run you may have to check the wiper switch connections with an ohm meter or battery and test light. If you don't have a diagram of the switch connections I will post one on my web site for you to copy.

You will need a wiring diagram to be able to ID which wire does what in the harness. If you don't have a diagram let me know and I will post one on my web site for you to copy.

QUESTION: Excellent.I have a good ground and the wipers started working when I jumpered them.I tried wiggling the wires around coming off the motor but no luck getting it to come on unless jumpered. What do you suggest. I do have a complete wiring diagram.
I also found another problem. I put the #3 fuse in that is located in the fuse box witch controls the MAP,INTERIOR LAMPS,CLOCK and the fuse immediately glow red and got hot. Without it in everything in this circuit works.
Also how do i tell if my air flow meter is working properly. When I turn the key on and open it it pumps fuel.

Thanks SID Noonan

Answer
Hi Sid,
Any time you have a fuse burn you need to look on your wiring diagram to see what items it powers and unplug every item it powers and put a fuse in and if it don't burn plug each item in one at a time to see what item is shorted. If it burns with every item unplugged you will then have to pull the fuse box down and unplug each wire on it and do the same test by plugging in one wire at a time. Then with your diagram trace that color coded wire to each junction to find the short. A lot of work but that is the only way I know to track the short down.

The air flow meter has a switch to operate the fuel pump relay so you know that part of it is ok.
Pin #6 to #27 is an air temp sensor and pin #6 to #7 is the carbon plate that the wiper is on. I don't have a resistance value on it but I found that if you just put an ohm meter across the pins and move the flap door back and forth and watch to see that there is no interruption in the sweep of the resistance is is then ok. They don't usually change value, just ware away the carbon on the circuit board and then get interruptions in the sweep of the door.
The air temp resistance is as follows. at+20C it is 2.5K ohms, at +40C it is 1.18K ohms and at 60C it is .6K ohms.
