Jaguar Repair: 1976 series 2 Carbs/aeu, electric solenoid, enrichment unit

Question
Had problem with auto enrichment unit so have swapped Jag manifold & carburettas over to Daimler of same diameter size which is fitted with a simpler enrichment unit that is engaged by a temperature sensor that switches on a solenoid which opens an extra Venturi and allows extra fuel for starting...this all functions well but engine is consuming huge amounts of fuel but has no take-off power(wont shift out of the garage)I am thinking that there may be a vacuum leak...what do you think pse..all suggestions appreciated, thanks

Answer
Hi Don,
If you are talking about the system sometimes called a "Third carburetor" with an electric solenoid that opens an flat valve to let air into the intake and a needle drops down onto an adjusting nut when in operation I have worked on that system on older Jaguars but never worked on any Daimlers. If that third carb is operating when it is not suppose to it is obvious because the thing always made a loud hissing noise and the needle is down. If the needle it up and there is no hissing sound it is not in operation.
If that is the case you have something else wrong and you need to start form scratch with a compression test and set the timing and after that adjust the float levels and set the mixture on both carbs as you would any SU. The same procedure is used on the Strombergs if you have them except you need to check the diaphragms, and adjust with the 3mm Allen wrench.
