Jaguar Repair: LOSS OF ANTIFREEZE, jaguar xjsc, temp gauge

Question
Dear Sir,
I own a 1987 Jaguar xjsc v-12 with only 35000 original miles on it. This car has not been driven much and i noticed that when i let it run for several hours in my driveway that there was antifreeze pouring out from under the drivers side front fender and i could hear what sounded like water boiling under the hood. What would be your expert advise on what this may be? I thank you for your help in this matter and await your reply. Thanks, Len

Answer
Hi Leonard,
Even though many cars can sit stationary running for hours, NONE were designed to do that. If you feel you have some reason to do that you should place an electric fan in front of the radiator.

There may or may not be anything wrong. It depends on if the radiator expansion tank was over full and what the temp gauge showed. Antifreeze / water expands when heated so it could be just the normal expansion of the coolant even if it were not over heating. If the temp gauge did show hot you need to run several tests (or have them run) First is to test for CO in the coolant. This is done with either CO machine or with the dye put in the coolant. Next is to test at what temp both thermostats open. Next if it is overheating is to have the circulation of coolant tested. Some of this needs to be done by an experienced shop.
