Jaguar Repair: gearbox, automatic transmission specialist, 1985 jaguar xj6

Question
Hello Howard. I have a 1985 jaguar xj6 4.2. When I put it into drive, it will not move up the gears into 2nd or 3rd as I move off. It will select drive ok and reverse also, but thats it. Recently I did notice odd sounds when I would select drive, kind of like a clatter or rattle. Any idea on what might be wrong?

Also, do you know where the fuses are for the front electric seats. Can't find them anywhere!
Thanks for your time.
Regards,
Martin

Answer
Hi Martin,
Since you are able to select drive and reverse but it just won't automatically up shift, it is not a shift cable adjustment so the only other adjustment to look at is the downshift cable on the throttle linkage. Hand operate the throttle and watch the small crimped on marker on the cable to see that it is set so as to be against the housing when the throttle is closed. This may not cause your problem but that is all of the adjustments you can do externally. If the fluid level is correct when warm and at idle then you need to locate an automatic transmission specialist to run pressure tests. Also note the color and smell of the fluid. It should be red and not have any smell of burned oil.
The transmission can be repaired by most any transmission shop because it is a Borg Warner 66 and most transmission shops can rebuild it.

Power seat fuse is an in-line fuse under the seat.
