Jaguar Repair: 85 Jaguar xj6, speedo cable, monkey puzzle

Question
QUESTION: I have a intermittent speedometer. I read what you had told another person, the problem is not with the meter itself, I feel. The trip computer and odometer are affected at the same time also. When the speedo is working I hear a slight clicking in the rear of the car, I feel its coming from where the housing on the tail of the transmission is located. I was going to remove the cable from there and try (with the car switched on - not running) turning the cable with a drill to see if the speedo works? I fear the problem is inside the transmission. I cant get the...is it a gear reduction off the side of the transmission where the cable screws on...its 2 narrow, do I have to drop the rear of the transmission to get it out?
Thanks for your time.

ANSWER: Hi Gary,
I don't know what cable you are talking about as there is no cable on a 85 XJ-6.

QUESTION: sorry, I misspoke...what i meant was...if I remove the device on the transmission, I think its called a pulse generator? I think it has a shaft like the size of a speedo cable that enters the transmission. perhaps I can attach the drill to that to see if it makes the speedo work...determining if the problem is the pulse generator or something else?...the problem is I can undo the bolts but cant pull the thing out of the transmission due to space. Is there another way?
Thanks

Answer
I have removed them from the car while the trans was in place but due to the monkey puzzle trans mounts it is difficult to loosen the trans mount so you can pry the trans over a little to get it out. You are not trying to remove driven gear and all are you? If it is too close you may just use some wood blocks and a large pry bar to spring the trans over a little.
