Jaguar Repair: Alternator problem ?, volt meter, charging system

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
When I turn my 85 xj6 off and take out the key, I get a icon picture of the battery.
What could that mean and what do I do about it?

ANSWER: Hi Lee,
You should not get any lights when the key is removed. But first you need to put a volt meter across the battery post and then start the engine and set the idle at about 1500 RPM and read the volt meter. It should read 13.8 to 14.5 volts. If not you have a charging system problem.

QUESTION: Hi,
Did what you suggested, volts read 13.84 indicator ligh went out. Could the battery need replacing?

Answer
Lee, 13.84v and the light on the instrument panel goes out, is an indication that the charging system is working.

Do you have a light on the center instrument cluster after you turn the ignition off and remove the key? if so you either have a wiring problem or the ignition switch is defective. You need to take a test light and a wiring diagram and test the circuits that are connected to the ignition switch and charge light to see what is wrong. If you don't have a diagram let me know and I will put one on my web site for you to use.
