Jaguar Repair: Wiil not pass California Smog Test, california smog test, air flow meter

Question
Hello, I just purchased a 1987  XJ6. I live in California. The car will not pass a California Smog Test. They tell me it is running to rich. Will you please point me in the right direction to correct this?  Thank You!

Answer
Hi Sheldon,
Too rich means the CO failed. I take it that the HC was ok?
Unfortunately, on a fuel injection system such as the L-Jetronic system there are many things that can make it run rich.
Things you need to test, Fuel pressure, 32 to 35 PSI with vacuum applied to the pressure regulator, Coolant temp sensor (injection sensor), Air Flow Meter, Charging system voltage 13.8 to 14.5v at a fast idle. If you have a battery that is not a "Deep Charge" battery that can make the injection system fuel wrong. Cold start injector leaking or open all the time. Any one or more injectors leaking or sticking.
Any one or more of these items can make it run rich, Each needs to be tested. Lots of work, no easy answer.
