Jaguar Repair: Removing rear vision mirror XJ-6 Series 3 85, rear view mirror, overhead cloth

Question
QUESTION: My overhead cloth is sagging and I would like to reglue.  I cannot work out how to take off the internal rear view mirror.  Also is there any other traps I should look out for in attempting this job?   Thanks for your assistance.

ANSWER: Hi Anthony,
The inside rear view mirror is a "Pop Off" in a socket. After you twist the mirror off, the socket is held in place by screws. The socket should be holding the edges of the head liner material in place.

QUESTION: Thanks Howard, Are there any other traps to look out for in removing the lining and reglueing.  Can it be done in place does skin the lining is glued to need to be taken out of the car?

Answer
If you are just correcting a few small spots on the edges like around the mirror and such you can probably get away with just gluing. I have done several headliners and I found in every case that the material backing (foam) had turned to dust and you can't glue the headliner cloth itself. The headliner material is available from normal headliner material suppliers so you don't have to get it from Jaguar. It is no small job to redo a headliner in a series III. Recovering the sun roof is even harder. I went through several different designs before arriving at one that I was happy with. If you have never done this type of work you would be far better off getting a quote from a trim shop (But be careful to check that they have done ser. III Jags before as they too may bite off more than they can chew.)
