Jeep Repair: 99 6cyl jeep tj ignition timing, home mechanic, dis system

Question
I had intermittent cutting out as if the engine was turned off, it would normally redraft normally some time later. I employed a home mechanic from Craiglist, he diagnosed a distributor problem. He could not explain what was wrong but said it was badly worn and some components were "falling apart". I did not see the distributor as I had abandoned it where it broke down. He changed out the distributor but not the cap, he also installed a new coil. When I picked it up, the engine was shuddering so badly that I thought he had connected the plug leads incorrectly. I left it again and called him to come back and complete the work properly. He called next day to say that his assistant had installed the distributor incorrectly and broken the drive gear, he replaced the distributor at his cost and dropped the vehicle at home while I was out. I tried to drive it that night but it was still nor right. It starts well but has almost no power and does not rev above about 1200 rpm. I suspect the second distributor has also not been installed correctly. I have a service manual and I'm a competent home mechanic but I'm short on time and working nights is no fun so I want to do the right thing first time. The manual makes it clear that timing adjustment is not possible with the non carbonated models, I suspect I need to take the distributor out and start again but need your advice if there's some other checks I can do before I do that. I have a timing light. Long story but I hope it gives you some clues. During this time I also replaced the ignition switch, it died without warning, with hindsight the cutting out might have been early warning of the switch failure. Appreciate your advice on what I should do next
Thanks

Answer
a timing light does not work on a DIS system    U dont have a distributor so to speak  its just holds the cam sensor on top.   What was more then likely done  it was not set to TDC and the timing is out just a bit   U will need to take it to a dealer that can set the sync with the dealer scanner.
