Jeep Repair: Cooling & Electrical, throttle position sensor, fuel pump filter

Question
QUESTION: Hi!, my 96 Jeep Cherokee has been overheating, then turns off.  It takes about an hour to restart after shutting off while driving.  I changed the thermostat to no avail.  I had a backyard mechanic suggest removing the catalytic converter (the inside) and putting back.  Big mistake for obvious (pollution) reasons. Then I test drove and felt like there was a fuel pump problem, would bog at high speed.  Changed the fuel pump, filter, radiator and throttle position sensor yesterday. Test drove today and temperature gauge seemed to stay in the middle after driving for about ten min, highway & street.  Car turned off right after.  Coil seemed to have a hair line crack, I will replace tomorrow.  Drove back to the mechanics and came across the same problem of car wanting to bog when punching the accelerator.  Mechanic says he will also check to see how the ignition module looks.  Please be assured, I will replace catalytic with new one. Questions: Does removing catalytic disrupt driving performance due to two sensors reading off each other?  Can all this stem from having a faulty coil?  Are there sensors known to cause these problems?

Thanks, Jesus.

ANSWER: I am going to try and answer your question the best that i can. But i want to start at the start of your probelms and this may answer a lot for you... You said that it was running hot.. Have you done any checks to see if the head gasket is leaking. this would lead to the rest of your problems. Check that out first and then get back to me, also make sure that the bleed off tube from the rad to the overflow and make sure that is not pluged. hope this helps

QUESTION: Thanks for your reply.  Negative on the head gasket leaking.  Bleed off tube is ok.  I replaced the coil yesterday and test drove only to be left stranded once again.  Same issues.  This time we checked to see if there was any spark coming from the coil when car shut off and result was no spark.  I towed the car back to the mechanics about an hour later.  As soon as we arrived, car started right up.  I will not give up, only go broke.

Answer
I guess this is the jeep thing, and we dont understand haha sorry for your luck, i dont know what to tell you.

OK so thanks for giving me a shi** rating for trying to answer your questions. Check this out,"I had a backyard mechanic suggest removing the catalytic converter (the inside) and putting back" Stupid! that is the dumbist thing i have ever heard of doing.

"Then I test drove and felt like there was a fuel pump problem, would bog at high speed" OK so lets see here, Bogging at high speeds.. Fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure sending unit, Head Gasket (when they start going or after they have gone you will notice bogging)

Changed the fuel pump, filter, (OK thats a great start)...  radiator (Radiator.. really why would you do that if you werent having cooling problems..)  and throttle position sensor yesterday (Sensor would most likly be unrelated to the problems you are having.

Test drove today and temperature gauge seemed to stay in the middle (210 ?)  after driving for about ten min, (Holy Crap it gets up to 210 in 10 mins.. dang that sounds like a cooling problem, well the rad has been changed, and the thermostat so what else is there in the system... well the overflow tube and the head gasket.) highway & street.

Car turned off right after ( because of internal over heat?, there are sensors that will not let the motor run if it gets to hot)

Coil seemed to have a hair line crack, I will replace tomorrow. Cracked coil?? Heat crack?? vibration?

Mechanic says he will also check to see how the ignition module looks like. ( WHY i would check the injectors before any of that. Duh!)

Questions: Does removing catalytic disrupt driving performance due to two sensors reading off each other? (NO)  Can all this stem from having a faulty coil? (Possibly)  Are there sensors known to cause these problems? ( only temp sensors)

Negative on the head gasket leaking ( how did you check it? or are you just saying that because you dont think it is)

Same issues. ( So everything that you have done hasnt done anything, and that backyard guy you have been taken it to sounds like a real winner!)

This time we checked to see if there was any spark coming from the coil when car shut off and result was no spark. ( what on God Green earth would cause you to think that it would still be sending a spark charge after the motor turns off? and how would this cause it not to start back up?

I towed the car back to the mechanics about an hour later.  As soon as we arrived, car started right up. ( wow an hour later, what would change within an hour, well the heat would disapate, thus letting the motor start back up. umm so im still right on what i told you the first time...) I will not give up, only go broke. ( you will go broke, if you keep going like this you will go broke) and have a non running new motor.

Thanks for the crappy ratings,
