Jeep Repair: 2004 Jeep Grnd Cherokee A/C controller, grand cherokees, air doors

My Grand Cherokee is making crunching and plastic groaning
noises in the dash regardless if the a/c is running or not.  
All of my relatives with Grand Cherokees had the same
problem to the tune of $800-$1000 for repair.  Is there
anything I can do prior to it self destructing.

Is it possible for someone with moderate mechanical skills
to replace the control box myself?

the plastic arms are coming apart  there is no fixing it but to replace the blend air doors. Buy a service manual and see if U want to tackle this or not  the dash and box has to come out to do this.
It would take u about a full day or more
I have done about 20 and takes me 3 hours.
