Jeep Repair: a/c problem, jeep cherokee sport, jeep cherokee

Question
Hi, I have a 2003 jeep cherokee sport and when the a/c is on there is water leaking into the passenger floor. What is causing this and can a guy who's kinda handy fix this or do I need to take to shop?

Answer
Hey Stephan,

No worries, it's normal for the ac unit to produce condensation while running. Normally you see a wet spot on the ground when you park after having used the ac. There is an evaporator condensation drain tube connected to the heater/ ac box under the dash. When connected properly it should drain outside! It sounds like the drain hose has become disconnected. Should be an easy fix for you.

Hi again Stephan,

Here's another possibility for the leak on the passenger floor when the ac is on. The drain tube could also be blocked by debris, if so  this would also cause a leak due to the water not being able to exit. If you find the drain hose is intact at the heater box then it's probably clogged up. You can drill a small hole in the drain tube housing then clear the blockage with a piece of wire. Seal the hole with some Permatex RTV sealant, run the ac and check water is exiting outside close to center of the jeep.
