Jeep Repair: water pump, flood response, pan gasket

Question
QUESTION: i woule like to know how to replace the water pump please. if it was that bottom pan gasket, wouldn't it be leaking from all around the whole pan? its only leaking around the front of the pan where the hose is and a little bit down it but not even half way. no i used a screw driver for the hose, but even when it was just the hose it only drip leaked, now it pours right out when i put liquid in with the engine off, its still dripping but its a faster constant drip and it all comes out, it drips out for a long time. it used to only be when the vehicle was running. i hope im not being a pain in the butt for you. if you have AIM chat my s/n is HBOMB4225 would save having to write on here. let me know what you think now please. thanks

ANSWER: Okay Heather, here's what I'd like to do.......... It's late where I live so tomorrow I'm going to go out and lay under my Cherokee and try to see if I can see what you're seeing. The pan you're talking about has me a bit confused. There shouldn't be any coolant coming from the oil pan because there isn't any coolant in it. The leak is traveling to the oil pan from somewhere else. I will explain how to remove and replace the water pump tomorrow okay? Sorry you're having this problem I know it's very frustrating!

Kenji

P.S. I don't have AIM sorry. I've got MSN messenger

Answer
Hi Heather,

I didn't forget about you. I was called out today for a flood response. Sorry I'm getting back to you so late! I think what you're seeing is the oil pan. I think from what you've described to me that it's the water pump that is leaking. It would leak down the hose and the side of the block and oil pan.

Okay here we go on removing and replacing the water pump.

Drain the coolant then remove the fan shroud. The shroud is the plastic thing that covers the fan around the inside of the radiator.
Loosen the 4 bolts that fasten the water pump pulley to the water pump. Don't take them all of the way out yet. After you loosen those 4 bolts then remove the drive belt and the pulley at the end of the water pump shaft. Detach the hoses from the water pump, remove the power steering and ac brackets but don't disconnect the hoses connected to them. Move them to the side and tie them out of the way if necessary. Make sure the power steering pump stays upright so fluid doesn't leak out. Now you can take the bolts out of the water pump. Remember which bolts come out of which holes because they are different lengths and types. Remove all of the old gasket material from the engine block with a gasket scraper or a really good putty knife. Put a thin coat of gasket sealer on the engine side of the new gasket. (I use Permatex Ultra Blue) and a thin layer on the new water pump. Carefully place the gasket on the water pump over the sealer you just applied then slip a couple of bolts that don't attach other brackets through the bolt hole to hold the gasket in place. Now carefully attach the water pump to the engine and tighten by hand. Now put the power steering and ac brackets back on with the proper bolts and tighten them 1/4 turn at a time until tight. Reinstall the pulley, drive belt, hoses and fan shroud. Check the tension on the drive belt, refill coolant, start and check for leaks.

Good luck,

Kenji
