QUESTION: yes it's a 4.0L  I have a scan tool that checks codes and erases them and it only comes up no link. I have only 5.81 volts going to the cam sensor (book says at least 8v and when I copnnect to the return it doesn't fluxuate between 1 and 5v also only roughly 5v going to coil. I've checked wires with ohm meter from comuter to coil and dist. all ok.

Answer
ok here is what u might have then  unplug the crank sensor  it is more then likely shorting out the computer. After the sensor is unplugged see if u can talk to the engine computer after that.  The info u got on the 8 volts is wrong  its a 5 volt system. If u can talk to the computer after the crank sensor is unplugged  then u need a crank sensor.
