Jeep Repair: Jeep starts hard, field windings, fuel pump relay

Question
I have a 1994 Jeep Wrangler and when I go to start it the fuel pump does not always turn on. This does not happen all the time just about every other time I go to start it. I thought it might be the fuel pump relay but replaced that and it didn't help.

Answer
I have run across this problem before. What happens is the fuel pump is an electric motor, similar to your starter but no so much. Sometimes when a starter goes bad it sticks. You can hit it with a hammer and it will sometimes start. Now I'm not saying to hit your fuel tank. The reason why that works is because one of the field windings is shorted or open and causes the motor to not turn. Thus it needs to be replaced before it goes out entirely. I recommend replacing the fuel pump. Make sure to replace the filter as well.
