Jeep Repair: 1997 Jeep Noise from Back, rear differentials, axle bearings

Question
When you get to about 40 mph you can hear a loud noise that is like a grinding sound, seems to come from the right rear of the jeep. When you swerve to the left and put a load on that side the noise lets up. Is this a common problem with jeeps. I suspect a wheel bearing problem. But you kow more so whats your thoughts and thanks alot..

Answer
It sounds like the axle bearings are worn.  If I knew more about rear differentials I'd be able to probably tell you whether or not you had a grand cherokee or a cherokee (wranglers didn't give much diff problems).  If I were really good I'd be able to tell you which differential you had (Grand Cherokee dana 35, 44, or Cherokee Corporate 8.25, 9.25).  But... I'm not and I'll just have to tell you that on certain differentials the noise only gets worse while expense stays about the same.  On the other kinds damage to the axle shaft itself can occur so that's why it's important for you to stop driving the vehicle except to a dealer and have them check it out.

There's a possibility it's a tire, but I think it's differential.
