Land Rover Repair: LR3 Cooling Fan Stays On

Question
Hi John,

My 2008 LR3 recently began 'roaring' more of than just upon start-up; no lights or warnings on the dash--engine temp gauge remains normal.

I'm accustomed to the rather loud rushing noise while the engine warms up a bit but about 10 days ago (during an off-road session that included steep hills & some wading) the cooling fan kicked on even though the engine temp was perfectly normal.  It now runs during acceleration but sounds like it lets up a cruising speed.

I've read that the fan is controlled by several inputs via the ECM but, since the rest of the vehicle seems to be running fine, I'm not sure what to do next.  Thanks in advance.

Answer
I would look at whether the engine driven fan has a stuck clutch.  If the electric fan is running all the time you will need to have a proper Land Rover test system that can show you the inputs to the ECU.  That's the only way to unravel why the fan may be on
