Land Rover Repair: 1999 Rover temperature gage, land rover engines, land rover discovery

Question
QUESTION: I had been driving my Land Rover Discovery II for about an  hour and the temperature gage move to the red zone when I was driving and when I decreased my speed, it went back to normal.  Does this mean that it is running hot?

ANSWER: It means you had an overheating incident, which you should take very seriously.  Land Rover engines have very little tolerance for overheating and are easily damaged.  There are several articles on the Robison Service website which describe overheating in great detail.  I'd refer you to those.

QUESTION: What action should I take to trouble shoot this problem?

Answer
1 - Make sure the cooling system is filled with the proper mix of DexCool and water.
2 - Make sure there are no leaks.  If there are leaks, get them fixed
3 - Warm the vehicle up and make sure the thermostat opens as it should.  Make sure belts are good and there are no visible problems
4 - Monitor car to see when it heats up.  Is this a problem that happens under load, like climbing a hill on the turnpike?  Does it happen idling in town?

Once you see how it overheats that should point you toward the problem.
