Land Rover Repair: Trans Failsafe Prog, check engine soon light, advance work

Question
For the past few days, we have been smelling oil in our vehicle. Nothing too strong, just slightly. We were planning to take it to the dealership on Monday anyway for this issue. I have also noticed it feeling "sputtery" at times as well and the check engine soon light jumped on. We've had the light diagnosed before and was told it was the o2 sensor in which we haven't fixed yet. But today as I was driving into my driveway. trans failsafe prog showed up. I tried to back up and it wouldn't allow me of course as if the transmission had completely shut down? I turned it down in hopes that it would clear; Tried restarting...no start, tried again, no start! Then on the third try, it started and there was no message. Today is Saturday and once again we are going to take it to the dealership anyway but I wanted to see if there was any information about this online anywhere or if a trained expert as yourself could help. About 3 weeks ago, we had an engine failsafe prog and took it in and found out that our battery was not strong enough. We had them replace it. Also the alternator has been replaced as well, twice actually because the first one went bad and they replaced it under the warranty. Those are the items that I saw it could be but both has been replaced. However since the first alternator went bad, I'm sure this one could as well. Any insight/assistance is appreciated! Thanks

Answer
As you have discovered, the transmission message could be indicative of a generalized electrical issue like alternator failure, or it could signal a problem in the gearbox.  There is not much advance work you can do . . . the thing to do is to let the dealer scan it and see what comes up.  Good luck with it.
