Land Rover Repair: landrover freelander 1.8 k series engine, landrover freelander, hydraulic tappets

Question
hi i have just replaced that headgasket on my freelander due to it leaking water out the front, put it back together and it is low on cpmpression and misfiring, was running fine before it came apart i have changed everything from  spark plugs and leads, distributor cap, rotar arm, checked and double checked the timing which is perfect, sqeezed out the hydraulic tappets before they were put back in and even talen them out again and checked and sqeezed them again its a bit better but hardly much ,myself put it down to wrong oil grade? or faulty tappets themself? i got all my parts from unipart automotive and was given fully synthetic oil i even put an additive in for sticky, valves tappets etc i have read of this being a comman fault, can u help????

Answer
It seems like there are only three possibilities:

1) The engine had bent valves or a liner problem in the block before you took it apart, and it still does.

2) You made a mistake on assembly and timed the cams wrong, thereby bending one or more valves

3) You made some other assembly error

In my experience, the only way to time the cams correctly is by using the factory clamp tools.  Did you do that?  If you tried to do them by eye, they are probably wrong.
