Land Rover Repair: land rover discovery series 2, land rover discovery, shuttle valves

Question
during easy on road motoring I have suddenly had both ABS and traction control warning lights come on and stay on.  The vehicle drives normally and there are no noises or vibrations.  My initial suspicion is an electrical bug.

Any guide as to possible bigs?

Answer
Hi Frank,

could be a wheel sensor.  This has known to be one of many causes for ABS and TC warning light to trigger.  You should check the seating of the wheel sensor and the wiring as well.

It could also be associated with the ABS modulator - hopefully not in your case - but it is common for shuttle valves to leak, switches to fail.  I coined this phrase many, many years ago and it is now know all over as the "three amigos"  ABS, TC and usually the HDC warning lights are triggered.

check this site for a simple description and fix to this problem:

"Many Thanks. Its obvously not a thing that i can just hit with a hammer. my first Land Rover was a series 2 SWB diesel that took me round the world two and a half times. (Over 40 countries). I kept it for 33 years and managed to put my hand in every part in that time. Having been Roverless for about 10 years the urge to own another diesel proved too much. I should have restored another series 2. I would never dare take a Disco were i took my original."

Wow! I'm impressed and a bit envious as well.  :)

I know that the Disco II probably could not accomplish what you did with your Series II SWB.  The Disco II is very dependent upon its many sensors and microprocessors and so field repairs are severely limited.  My Disco series I was not as 'Hi-tech' and I was able to some repairs without the need for a Testbook.  I doubt very much that the Disco II was designed for anything other than US roads and highways.

From time to time, I have Series owners asking me for help.  This is a vehicle I'd like to know more about but am unable to at this time.  Do you think I could call upon you for assistance if the occasion should arise? Please send me an email with your reponse.  jmcinnis64@hotmail.com
