Question
i recently got a 2001 land rover, and the acceleration on it is horrible it take forever to even go 10 mph on the freeway the car jerks and the speed wont top 50 mph. i recently tried to go up hill and it wouldn't go more then 10 mph? what would the problem be and how much would it cost? i just got it fixed about 5 days ago & that was about 2500$, is this car really worth my time and money anymore?

Answer
Hi Stephenie

definately take the Disco back to where it was repaired if you are still having trouble with it.

The problem you describe could one of many faults, most are expensive and some are not.  The throttle position sensor is a common problem, has symptoms like you describe and is not too expensive to repair.  Sticking exhaust valves can rob you of power, you would hear a slight tick tick tick in the engine and is about $2000 to repair (valve job).

"Is this car really worth my time and money anymore?"... If you just bought this vehicle and have already spent $2500 and you still have engine trouble, you may consider having the vehicle repaired then sell it.  The cost of maintaining a series II Disco can be very high.  If you think $2500 was expensive...just wait.  There will be more.  I am not a fortune teller BUT I do have loads of experience (sadly) with my Disco and its maintenance.

Since you are not the original owner, you have no way of knowing how this vehicle was maintained.  You could have a LR dealership to a complete checkup and tell you if there are any problem areas (they are good at this - sadly).  This kind of inspection could cost you $100 to $400 - depending on the dealership.  BTW:  It may be a good idea to also have LR register you as the new owner, in case of any recalls.

If you are not sure of owning the vehicle anymore - take a look online to see what your Disco is worth - check the online autotrader search engines.  Usually, these vehicle are running without any troubles.  Usually.

You can either fix the Disco then sell it OR sell it "as is" and be done with it.  If you keep the Disco, be forwarned that repairs are expensive - as you've just experienced.  Unless you can do some of the work yourself, further repairs will happen and if you need LR expertise to do the repair, like the problem you are having now, it will be costly.

Common problems with series II Disco's are with window operations, door locks, water leaks, fusebox and relay failures, steering box problems, wheel hubs, ABS modulators (big problem), and various engine sensors.  The mass air flow sensor (MAF) is expensive to replace and has been known to fail frequently in Disco II's.

I wish you luck with this.
