Land Rover Repair: discovery popped out of high diffrential and now will not move in drive, land rover specialist, clutch pack

Question
HI JOHN,I HAVE A 96' DISCO WITH 78K MILES.LAST WEEKEND I HAD SHIFTED THE DIFFERENTIAL INTO HIGH WITH NO PROBLEMS TO GO OFFROAD,WHEN I WENT TO SHIFT OUT OF HIGH AND BACK TO NORMAL DRIVING,THE DIFFERENTIAL POPPED OUT OF GEAR.I WENT TO PUT IT BACK IN FOR NORMAL ROAD DRIVING AND SELECTED THE AUTO TRANS TO (D) THE ROVER WOULD NOT MOVE,LIKE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL.THE ONLY WAY IT WOULD MOVE IS IF I MOVED THE THE AUTO TRANS SHIFTER(3) THEN HAD TO SHIFT THRU TO (D) TO GET TO SPEED.IT WILL STAY IN (D) AT SPEED UNTIL ABOUT 5 MPH THEN THE AUTO TRANS FREE WHEELS, THEN I NEED TO SHIFT THE SELECTOR DOWN TO (3) AND SHIFT THRU UP TO (D)TO KEEP IT MOVING.WE LOVE THIS ROVER AND HAVE HAD GREAT LUCK WITH IT SINCE IT WAS NEW. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE

Answer
I can't tell from your description if you have a problem with the transfer case shift linkage or if you burned out the first gear clutch pack off-roading.  It sounds like you have a cooked first gear.  I'd take the vehicle to either a Land Rover specialist or a transmission shop and have them drive the vehicle and render an opinion.
