Land Rover Repair: Unreliable Freeander, fuel consumption, sensor readings

Question
Hi,
I have a 1998 Petrol Freelander 1.8(yes I know......), when it works it is a really perfect car for me but it has 3 big faults which make it unreliable.
1. It doesn't always start
2. It can suddenly lose power and will only drive at 10 mph or less (this is usually when the tank is under half or I have been driving for an hour or more).
3. The fuel consumption is exorbitantly high.

I'm presuming all three of these things - being linked to fuel - are possible symptoms of the same fault. I'm really a Defender girl and can work my way around a trad Landrover engine but the fuel filter being inbuilt flummoxed me slightly and I therefore defer to the expert. Any ideas

Answer
The symptoms you describe do not point to any particular problem.  The way we'd fix that vehicle would be with the use of the Autologic or T4 Land Rover test system. Find a shop with a proper Land Rover test kit, and have them take a look at the live data from the engine.  There may be stored fault codes that will point to problems.  There may also be "off kilter" sensor readings that will point to problems.  The way to resolve your truck is through electronic test.
