Land Rover Repair: PO727 code, land rover range rover, rover range rover

Question
My mechanice says the code PO727 is showing up for the problem we are having with our 1996 Land Rover Range Rover but he can't find anything on that code. Can you tell me what this means and any information that may help my mechanic solve the problem? The Rover is dying when the RPM's are not keep up so anytime the idle is low (stopping etc).
Thanks for your help.

Answer
When I read questions like yours I feel kind of worried.  You have this code, and a so-called "professional" can't find anything on it???  First of all, typing "Land Rover P0727" into Google tells us this is a engine position sensor code.  There's no mystery to it.

If your mechanic cannot explore codes like this, either through the workshop manual or online, he should stick to simpler repairs.  I know that sounds sarcastic, but it's not.  One of the worst issues in our car fixing trade is lack of proper skills, combined with the inability to know when you ar ein over year head.

My advice is twofold:

1) Find someone with a bit more skill and familiarity with LR products

2) Find someone with a proper LR test system so you can look at the signal from that sensor and decide what's actually going on - a sensor, the trigger for it, the wiring, or something else.

Best of luck
