Land Rover Repair: 2000 Land Rover Discovery II V8-4.0L, land rover discovery, crank shaft

Question
QUESTION: The problem is that this vehicle starts great cold, and then runs great for however long needed, but when turned off, will not restart until it cools off completely. Once cool, it starts up quickly and again runs great.

ANSWER: It is probably a faulty crank sensor.  First, Make sure fuel injectors are not leaking down and fuel pressure is correct.  If they are fine, try replacing the crank sensor.

QUESTION: I do not understand how you came to the conclusion that a sensor which has no temperature related function is the cause of my problem. Unless it is because there have been many people who have had this problem, which you have heard about. Which would lead us to more of a manufacture's defect in the sensor, not a faulty sensor, right? Or am I just completely wrong about the functions of the crank shaft sensor? I am sure the issue is directly related to the temperature of the engine, which means the crank sensor is about the last thing I would suspect.

Answer
When the engine is cold and the sensor is cold, there is better continuity.  As the sensor and components warm up, the continuity in the sensor diminishes.  Thus, a very common sympton of crank sensor failure (which is very commin in this vehicle) is failure to start or stalling out when the engine is warm.
