Land Rover Repair: Green S light, sport mode, downshifting

Question
What is the Green "S" light used for in the Dash of the D2? Is it like an Overdrive (to save gas) when you push the "Mode" button in the panel of the gear shift?

Answer
Hi Theresa,

the green "S" light indicates that you are using the "Sport" mode on your gearbox and transmission.

Sport mode is used for quick responses to your use of the accelerator, the downshifting of your transmission happen faster; the upshifting is delayed so you can remain in the faster gear longer.  You reference to Overdrive is not too far off.  Downside to Sport mode is more consumption of fuel and perhaps a more aggressive driving potential.

I use it for winding roads, climbing a long slow hill and when I want the extra power in passing vehicles.  A good example is a hill near our home that has a speed limit change half way up.  It goes from 50kph to 90kph.  I usually take the hill slow and casual to conserve gas.  Sometimes, if I have an aggressive driver behind me, I make the speed transition faster in sport mode and leave those type of drivers further behind.
