Land Rover Repair: power steering DII SD7 2001, steering box, fan belt

Question
power steering began leaking slowly 1 week ago.  Topped off fluid every 3-4 days.  Now reservoir empties out in 15-20 minutes.  I can't see where it is leaking from. Would you help me with pictures and instructions for diagnosis and replacement?

Answer
Hi Glenn,

it's harder to detect on the series II with the MAF, ACE and A/C in the way.  You'll have to determine if it's the reservoir, the PS pump, piping or the steering box that has the leak.  You could try wrapping individual towels around all three to see which has the most fluid in 15 to 20 minutes of usage.  Use tape to hold done the towel and keep it away from the fan, belt and pulleys.

I had a problem with the PS pump.  Leak was with the seal on the pulley wheel caused by a seized bearing I suppose.  I had to replace the entire pump.

Try wrapping the steering box, refill the reservoir and start up the engine. As you say, in 20 minutes you'll see if the box is the cause.  Must be a mess on your garage floor.

Send me an email and I'll reply with some techsheets on replacing the pump and steering box.
