Land Rover Repair: Range Rover P38 2001 98000kms, range rover p38, manual clutch

Question
All the following have started in about the last 500km of driving and in this order. I still get all of them.

1.   Dull metallic whine on deceleration that is getting worse.
2.   When cruising the engine feels as though it’s hesitating sometimes…its quite subtle but it is there on occasion.
3.   Sometimes when I go to pull away from the lights the revs (which idle normally) will drop to nearly die and then pick up and off I go.
4.   When cold the car starts and runs normally. I don’t seem to get any problems until it’s up to temperature. But it does now sometimes rev up to about 2500rpm on a hot start and slowly drop to normal. I can tap the throttle pedal to bring it down quicker.
5.   When driving normally in traffic at 60, 70 or on the freeway at 100 the car will sometimes shudder violently. The faster I am travelling the worse the shudder. (I think at 150km/hr the whole damn thing would probably explode)
6.   Along with (5) above the gearbox will start changing gears switching between 3rd and 4th on speeds under 80km/hr (but not 2nd). On the freeway it just recently started to use 2nd as well. I felt as though I was loosing all drive on the freeway this Wednesday with the bastard sometimes dropping to 2nd and unable to get out of 2nd sitting at 5000rpm unless I eased right off allowing the car to slow slightly and find 3rd the 4th again (the longer I left it hanging in 2nd the more it felt like the car was slowing, as if drive was failing like when a manual clutch wears out). This process of gentle picking up speed to about 90km/hr and easing off to get it to stay in 3rd or 4th and maintain about 80km/hr continued for 20km. On esit of the freeway it settled again with only a few shift changes to get back to work (3km) at 70 to 80km/hr. Up-hill was the worst. A previous experience on the freeway showed that even cruise control couldn’t stop the gear shifts. (Could it be the throttle body?)

In the last 200km I have dropped the front and rear diff oils and changed to Redline 75w90 in both. The oil that came out was clear and new looking. Both magnets had a small pile of filings on them but no chips.

I also drained the transfer box. Again clean with no darkness or burnt smells. Replaced with Semi-synthetic Dexron III. (I forget the brand, but it wasn’t Redline)

Have not checked the gearbox…all oils were change by dealer at 91000. And I have no leaks.

The engine is smooth running in the drive or in park always. These problems only seem to come up when driving.

Been into the dealer twice now in the 500km. It won't go wrong for them and there are no fault codes. Same dealer changed the Idle Control Valve at last service, along with all plug leads in a thorough service.

Please help.

Answer
I think you have several problems going on, and I think it's going to take some time and effort to solve eaqch one.  The first step is to find a service technician and repair shop that cares enough to spend the time to see this stuff with you.  It sounds like someone may need to take quite a long test ride to even experience the issues.  Only then can they begin trying to resolve them.  This may be necessary several times as the problems must be attacked one by one.  Why don't you look on rangerovers.net at their list of repair shops and see if you can find some alternatives?

People send trucks like yours to Robison Service from all over, so I know shops with the required expertise are not common.
