Land Rover Repair: 1998 range rover, land rover specialist, replacing head gaskets

Question
QUESTION: I had starter replaced thirty days ago at a rr shop. Car was starting horrible a few days ago but running fine. After reading your posts I realized battery was going dead. Replaced that and car was good to go. I just purchased the car five days ago and the previous owner had a new radio installed that needed the code. I took it in had the A.C charged and radio turned on as well as diagnostics for the check engine light. Came out, radio works, A.C was cold and no light. Now light is on again, air is not so cold. Starter is thirty days old, the first few days I had the truck when I would crank It at any time the rpm's would be high and would only go down once in gear. Today after getting out of the shop yesterday, when I crank the rpm's are below one thousand and the oil light comes on and the car begins to overheat. If I crank and rpm's are over one k the oil light does not come on but will after time run hot. If I sit in the drive way and everything is fine and place in reverse the rpm's now go down and the oil light comes on, eventually getting hot. I have receipts from previous owner replacing head gaskets, all suspension, censors etc.. not sure where this is coming from and any help you could offer would be great thank you. Truck has 90k miles

ANSWER: It sounds like you bought a car that had a multiplicity of problems, and it's now suffering from those problems compounded by "guess and replace" repair processes.  I would urge you to seek a truly qualified Land Rover specialist and have them check over the entire vehicle before you dig yourself an even deeper hole.

You may be able to look for a shop in the directory at www.rangerovers.net

QUESTION: cleaned throttle body and replaced thermostat ( there was not one installed ). cranks and runs well , no overheating after 40 min road and highway test. Problem now is transmission will not shift until 3500 rpm's. Before it was shifting to quickly and dragging now it waits to long. Is this a flush and filter change? sensor? computer..... When I come to a stop it shifts down and almost shuts off, oil light flickers.

Answer
You probably have a failing transmission.  Try flushing the fluid but I would not hope for too much.

If it also almost stalls you have some issues with the engine too.  You will probably have to look at the idle control circuit.

Once again I'd really urge you to find someone who knows Land Rovers.  Most general mechanics will be over their heads with a truck like yours.
